Don’t throw stuff at me, but I’ve already started prepping and planning for back to school this year, and that includes tweaking my already working systems like my school paperwork storage. 🙂
School starts in a little less than four weeks here, and I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t fully ready for the onslaught of paperwork that came home when my daughter started school last year! You moms that have multiple children-seriously I salute you, especially if you’re able to keep your counters paper clutter free…double salute on that one! 🙂
I knew right away I needed to set up a solution to get a handle on those school papers before they consumed my kitchen counter. So I set up this system for our house and it worked wonders last year for keeping me sane and organized. This year I plan to do exactly the same but with a few little tweaks…
Every day while my daughter was getting changed out of her uniform when she came home I would take the opportunity to go through her folders and check for papers. I treated her school stuff just like I would mail. Junk- immediately in the trash, important papers with dates- tacked to my fridge so I could remember to add it to my calendar/planner then trash, homework that needed to be done-put on her homework station, school work/homework that was graded including tests and art projects, as well as report cards etc…- into my bin or “drop zone” to sort through later.
I used a bin just like this…
Anything that looked like I wanted to keep went into it. It was the perfect size to hold almost everything for the week, until I had a chance to go through it on the weekend. It worked well, but I’m seriously considering making a ‘command center’ somewhere in my kitchen. I’m not 100% sure yet, but if I do, of course I’ll share it with you 🙂
Every weekend I would go through that box and empty it out for the following week. Special school work, art projects, pictures, report cards, teacher notes…anything that felt special that some day she might want to look back on got put in her ‘Memory Box.’
Originally it was just a spare cardboard file box that we had, and extra hanging folders in multiple colors, but I recently ordered new things for on Amazon to make it a little more special….

I originally had different color hanging folders, but found that using all one color was easier on the eyes, and as for labeling I just used my little Dyamo to whip out the grade labels. Super easy!
I love that there is plenty of room to store all of my daughter’s school keepsakes throughout the years.
I just pop on the cover and then stick it on the shelf in my office closet. It’s easy to access for whenever I need it which is so important in maintaining an organized space whether its big or small like this. 🙂
I’d love to hear how you’ve created a system for organizing school paperwork!
Are you already prepping for the school year ahead too? Tell me what you’re doing to get organized this year… 🙂
Talk to you soon friends, take care!
