Did you know Halloween is one of my favorite holidays? I just love all the creepy crawly goodness that comes along with it, but having a (almost) 6 year old makes me tone down my wild ideas. One of these days I’ll be able to decorate a little more rated R, but for now a little glitz, glam and whimsy with a touch of fright will do!
Today I’m going to show you how to make this whimsical-but sorta-scary potted tree of crows, and the best part about it? I got almost all of my Halloween supplies at Dollar General and it cost me under $20 to make!
I think it turned out super cool…Here’s what you’ll need to make your own…
- dead tree or branches
- urn or something similar
- rocks (to hold the tree or sticks in place)
- moss
- spray paint (i used purple and white)
- black Halloween crows
- plastic skulls or bones (optional: to decorate the base)
I’ve been planning this little Halloween tree for about 2-3 months….thanks to a neighbor and a transplant gone wrong. Here’s what I mean…
A couple of months ago our neighbor offered up a free maple tree to us if we came and dug it out of their yard. So we went with shovels in hand, and were instantly deflated upon inspection realizing that the tree was right on top of their sprinkler system. Since my husband has been known to tear those suckers up when doing yard work, I thought it was best if her husband actually did the digging so we wouldn’t be responsible for wrecking their pipes.
Long story short, when she called me to come get the tree a few days later I noticed that her husband had cut the roots instead of digging around them…big no no if you’re trying to transplant anything. So I took the tree home (already planning it’s funeral) knowing that it wasn’t going to make it, but planted it anyway.
I’m a big believer in finding the silver lining in all situations so even though I knew it was hopeless to think that tree would some day grow big and strong, I decided to look at the glass half full and say “hey! that scrawny little dead tree is going to make a perfect Halloween decoration in a few weeks!”
So, I left it.
Yep. Planted in the ground. Dead. {Our HOA loves us, I’m sure}
So after spray painting it purple, and adding white stripes alla Beetle Juice and Robin Thicke’s pants…I finally decided to dig the poor thing up and plop it into my urn by the front door.
I picked up a few bags of moss and a few black crows from Dollar General to “spookify it” and voila…
Halloween decorating doesn’t have to be expensive! Actually Halloween can be done for cheap cheap cheap, and with stores around like Dollar General, you can find everything you need!
