Meat Sauce
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound Italian sausage
- 1 medium sweet onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 (24-ounce) jars marinara sauce
- 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Cheese Layer
- 15 ounces ricotta cheese
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley
Lasagna
- 12 lasagna noodles, cooked according to package directions
- 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Additional Parmesan cheese for topping
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- In a large Dutch oven or skillet, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium-high heat. Drain excess grease if necessary.
- Add onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in marinara sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes.
- In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, Parmesan cheese, and parsley. Mix until smooth.
- Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Layer 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
- Spread one-third of the ricotta mixture over the noodles.
- Top with one-third of the meat sauce and one cup of mozzarella cheese.
- Repeat layers two more times.
- Finish with the remaining noodles, remaining meat sauce, mozzarella cheese, and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake an additional 15–20 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
- Allow lasagna to rest for 15 minutes before slicing.
- Garnish with fresh parsley and serve.
Notes
- Assemble up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerate before baking.
- Freeze unbaked or baked lasagna for up to 3 months.
- For extra flavor, add pepperoni or cooked bacon between the layers.
- Letting the lasagna rest before cutting helps create cleaner slices.
