Creamy mashed celery potatoes are a simple, budget-friendly twist on classic mashed potatoes. Made with tender potatoes, fresh celery, butter, and milk, this comforting side dish is perfect for holidays or everyday dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds potatoes (russet or Yukon gold), peeled and cubed
  • 23 celery stalks, finely diced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup milk (more as needed)
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon garlic powder or 2 cloves garlic, minced

Instructions

  • Add the cubed potatoes and diced celery to a large pot of salted water.
  • Bring to a boil and cook for 12–15 minutes, until fork-tender.
  • Drain well and return to the pot to remove excess moisture.
  • Add butter and begin mashing.
  • Slowly pour in milk while mashing until smooth and creamy.
  • Stir in salt, pepper, and optional garlic.
  • Taste, adjust seasoning, and serve warm with extra butter if desired.

Notes

  • Dice celery small so it softens evenly with the potatoes
  • Warm the milk before adding for extra creamy texture
  • Don’t overmix to avoid gummy potatoes
  • Add cheese or herbs for variation
