Description
This classic Irish coffee recipe combines hot freshly brewed coffee, smooth Irish whiskey, a touch of brown sugar, and a silky layer of lightly whipped cream. It’s the perfect warm cocktail for chilly evenings, holiday gatherings, or St. Patrick’s Day.
Ingredients
1 cup hot freshly brewed coffee
1 ½ oz Irish whiskey
1–2 teaspoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons heavy cream
Optional garnish
Pinch fresh grated nutmeg or cinnamon
Instructions
-
Warm the glass.
Fill a heatproof glass mug with hot water for about 30 seconds, then pour the water out. This keeps your Irish coffee hot longer. -
Add the sugar and whiskey.
Add the brown sugar and Irish whiskey to the warm glass. -
Pour in the hot coffee.
Fill the glass with hot brewed coffee and stir well until the sugar dissolves. -
Lightly whip the cream.
Whip the heavy cream just until it thickens slightly but is still pourable. -
Float the cream on top.
Slowly pour the cream over the back of a spoon so it gently floats on top of the coffee. -
Serve immediately.
Do not stir. Sip the coffee through the layer of cream.
Notes
For the best flavor, use strong freshly brewed coffee so the whiskey and cream don’t overpower the drink.
Lightly whipped cream floats best and creates the classic Irish coffee look.
Brown sugar adds a subtle caramel flavor that pairs perfectly with Irish whiskey.
