Don’t forget about your furkids this holiday season! These homemade candy cane dog treats are the perfect gift to make for them! 🙂
Want to know the best part about baking for dogs?
They wont complain if it turns out like poo! 🙂
Seriously though, my goal for 2017 is to learn to love baking. I’ve always been a throw everything in the pot kind of girl, so measuring out things just isn’t my idea of a good time.
But I’m going to try…I want to try. Maybe I’ll even take a couple of baking workshops somewhere to feel inspired. 🙂
But back the dog treats…
I love spoiling my pups this time of year. Well… Really every time of year, but especially during the holidays.
They’re basically my other kids and I have to include them in the festivities. 🙂
So I decided to make them so yummy cookies to last throughout the holiday season.
{I’m assuming they’re yummy}
They didn’t seem to have any complaints! 😉
Here’s how to make them…
- 3 cups whole wheat flour + more
- 2 eggs
- 1/3 cup peanut butter
- 2/3 cup pumpkin puree
- 3-4 tablespoons beet juice
In a large mixing bowl, combine and whisk the eggs, peanut butter, and pumpkin puree until smooth. Then add in the flour 1 cup at a time.
Cut the dough in half, and set one half aside. Add in the beet juice to the remaining half in the bowl and mix.
*You may need to add flour now a little at a time until the dough isn’t sticky.
I opted to use beet juice as my coloring instead of food dye to keep this natural.
Then lightly flour the counter and roll out both doughs separately. Then lay one on top of the other and roll lightly again.
Use a pizza cutter to cut out strips of dough.
And then twist them. 🙂
The set your oven to 350 and place these dog treats on a silicone mat on a baking sheet. Curve the tops to make them look like candy canes 🙂
Bake for about 35-45 minutes.
These cookies won’t be entirely hard if you make them as large as I did. I have labradors so I wanted the treats to be substantial.
The smaller you make them, the harder they’ll be. If you do make them smaller, I’d adjust the baking time to about 20-25 minutes.
And as always…Please check with your vet before making these to make sure they’ll be okay for your fur babies.
Can we say….SPOILED? 🙂
I hope you’ll give these sweet holiday treats for your dogs a try! It was a labor of love but so worth it. They loved them! 🙂
Talk to you soon friends, take care!
XO
