Description
Tanghulu is a traditional Chinese candied fruit snack made by dipping fresh fruit into hot sugar syrup that hardens into a crunchy glass-like candy shell. This easy tanghulu recipe uses just three ingredients and creates beautiful fruit skewers that are crisp, sweet, and incredibly satisfying.
Ingredients
1 pound fresh fruit (strawberries, grapes, blueberries, kiwi, or mandarins)
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup water
Wooden skewers
Instructions
-
Wash the fruit thoroughly and dry it completely. Any moisture will prevent the sugar coating from sticking.
-
Thread the fruit onto wooden skewers, leaving space at the bottom for a handle.
-
In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water.
-
Heat over medium heat without stirring until the mixture begins to boil.
-
Allow the syrup to cook until it reaches 300°F (hard crack stage). This usually takes about 5–8 minutes.
-
Quickly dip each fruit skewer into the hot sugar syrup, rotating to coat evenly.
-
Place the coated fruit onto parchment paper or a silicone mat.
-
Allow the sugar coating to harden for about 1–2 minutes before serving.
Notes
Make sure fruit is completely dry before dipping or the sugar coating may slide off.
Work quickly once the syrup reaches the correct temperature because the sugar hardens fast.
Tanghulu is best eaten fresh within a few hours for the best crunch.
