This creamy ham and pea pasta salad is an easy, crowd-pleasing side dish made with shell pasta, tender ham, sweet peas, and a rich, garlicky dressing. Perfect for summer potlucks, BBQs, picnics, or a quick make-ahead meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb shell pasta (or other short pasta)

  • 2 cups diced ham

  • 1 cup frozen peas, thawed

  • 1 cup sliced green onions

  • 34 cloves garlic, minced

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened

  • ¾1 cup reserved pasta water (as needed)

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 12 tablespoons poppy seeds (optional)

Instructions

  • Cook pasta according to package directions until al dente. Reserve 1 cup of the pasta water before draining.

  • In a large bowl, combine the cooked pasta, diced ham, peas, and green onions.

  • In a separate bowl, mix the cream cheese with garlic and a splash of warm reserved pasta water until smooth and creamy.

  • Pour the dressing over the pasta mixture and toss to coat evenly. Add additional pasta water as needed to reach desired creaminess.

  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  • Sprinkle with poppy seeds if using.

  • Serve immediately or refrigerate for 1 hour for best flavor.

Notes

  • Pasta salad will thicken as it chills—stir and add a splash of pasta water or milk before serving if needed.

  • This recipe is great for using leftover holiday ham.

  • For best texture, slightly undercook the pasta.
