Description

These copycat IKEA Swedish meatballs are tender, flavorful, and simmered in a rich, creamy gravy. Made with a blend of beef and pork and warm spices, this cozy comfort food is perfect served over mashed potatoes with lingonberry jam.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ lb ground pork
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely grated
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp allspice
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg

For the Gravy:

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, grated onion, egg, milk, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. Mix gently until just combined.
  • Roll into small meatballs (about 1 tablespoon each).
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat with a little butter. Brown the meatballs on all sides until golden. Remove and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt butter and whisk in flour. Cook for 1–2 minutes until lightly golden.
  • Slowly whisk in beef broth until smooth. Stir in heavy cream and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until thickened.
  • Return meatballs to the skillet and simmer for 8–10 minutes until fully cooked and coated in the gravy.
  • Serve hot over mashed potatoes with lingonberry jam if desired.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the meatball mixture to keep them tender
  • Grated onion adds moisture and flavor
  • For extra richness, use full-fat cream
  • Lingonberry jam adds the classic sweet contrast
