Rich, creamy homemade Christmas hot cocoa made with sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, and vanilla. It is the perfect easy holiday drink for Christmas movie nights, looking at lights, or Christmas morning.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup good-quality hot cocoa mix
  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • ¼ cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream, for serving
  • Red and green sprinkles, mini marshmallows, or crushed peppermint, for serving

Instructions

  1. Add the milk to a large saucepan and heat over medium-low heat until steaming. Do not let it boil.
  2. Whisk in the hot cocoa mix until smooth.
  3. Add the sweetened condensed milk and whisk until fully combined and creamy.
  4. Remove from the heat. Stir in the mini chocolate chips, salt, and vanilla extract until the chocolate is melted and the cocoa is smooth.
  5. Pour into mugs. Top with whipped cream and festive sprinkles, mini marshmallows, or crushed peppermint, if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Whole milk makes the creamiest Christmas cocoa, but 2% milk can be used.
  • Keep the heat low and do not boil the cocoa.
  • For a party, transfer the finished cocoa to a slow cooker set on warm and stir occasionally.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop with a splash of milk.
