Tender steak simmered low and slow in a rich garlic tomato sauce with peppers, onions, and Italian herbs. This easy Steak Pizzaiola is a cozy, affordable Italian comfort food dinner perfect served over spaghetti.


Ingredients

For the Steak Pizzaiola

  • 2 pounds round steak, chuck steak, or cube steak
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh chopped basil or parsley for garnish

For Serving

  • Cooked spaghetti
  • Grated Parmesan cheese


Instructions

  1. Season steak generously with salt and black pepper.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  3. Sear steak for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same pan, cook sliced onions and peppers until softened.
  5. Stir in garlic, oregano, Italian seasoning, and crushed red pepper flakes.
  6. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and beef broth. Stir well.
  7. Return steak to the pan and spoon sauce over the top.
  8. Cover and simmer on low heat for 1 1/2 to 2 hours until steak is fork tender.
  9. Serve over cooked spaghetti and garnish with Parmesan cheese and chopped basil.

Notes

  • Chuck steak gives the richest flavor.
  • Add mushrooms for extra heartiness.
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day.
