Description

These homemade pork and beans are rich, smoky, sweet, and savory with tender beans simmered in a thick BBQ-style sauce. The perfect easy comfort food side dish for cookouts, potlucks, and family dinners.


Ingredients

  • 8 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 1 cup diced pork shoulder, salt pork, or pork belly
  • 2 (28-ounce) cans pork and beans
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh chives for garnish (optional)


Instructions

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Step 2

Cook chopped bacon in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat until crispy. Remove bacon and set aside.

Step 3

Leave about 1 tablespoon of bacon grease in the pan. Add diced onion and diced pork shoulder or salt pork. Cook until onions soften and pork begins to brown.

Step 4

Stir in brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper.

Step 5

Add pork and beans and stir until fully combined.

Step 6

Transfer mixture to a baking dish if needed and bake uncovered for 45–60 minutes until thick and bubbly.

Step 7

Top with crispy bacon and fresh chives before serving.

Notes

  • For extra smoky flavor, add a splash of barbecue sauce.
  • These beans taste even better the next day.
