What you can REALLY expect when owning labradors…

I remember when I was pregnant and I got that book “What to expect when you’re expecting.” I feel like they need to make a version for that when you bring a lab puppy home, because every day is always an unexpected adventure! I started this blog in 2011, and my first big post that began to bring my site some attention was when I let the world wide web know that our new puppy Bentley had just peed on our couch. Ahh memories. 😉

Luckily, I figured out how to get rid of that urine smell and was able to salvage our sectional. That odor eliminator spray has been a godsend and I still use it for lots of things to this day! Since then, I’ve supplied some information to you guys on how I care for my pups. Today, I thought I’d share with you what really happens behind the scenes though… The things that make me laugh until I can’t breathe, and the things that make me wonder what in the world I was thinking when I decided to become a momma to these three crazy fur kids! But honestly, I love these guys, and can’t imagine my home life without them. It’s like having three toddlers that never grow up. Every day is a new surprise, so if you’re thinking about owning a labrador or three, here’s what kind of chaos you can expect. 😉

The mornings start off easy enough…

I can expect to wake up to a paw in the face or a thorough face washing (a.k.a licking) because when the sun comes up these guys know it’s time to eat! I’ve been feeding my labs Wellness pet food for years, and even before I had labs, my Pekingese ate Wellness soft food, so I was very familiar with the brand and trust it for my pups. Portia has pretty bad skin allergies and Wellness Complete Health Grain Free has really helped keep any flare ups under control. If your dog suffers from ear infections, skin allergies such as hot spots and acne, check with your vet about switching their food. I know for Portia she had an allergy to chicken and grains, so I always buy grain free and stay away from the poultry flavor. Her skin and coat have never looked better! That really goes for all three! 🙂

After breakfast, Bentley, Portia, and Harley really love helping me with household chores. This can be anything from helping me out while I’m trying to load the dishwasher…

…to reminding me that I need to take out the trash. {insert eye roll here}

They’re such BIG helps, aren’t they?! 😀

After chores, its time to play and labradors LOVE TO PLAY! Make sure you buy them plenty of toys to keep their mouths busy.

Because if you don’t…That pair of Manola Blahniks, or that American Girl Doll is going to become their new favorite thing! Did I mention labradors have expensive taste? At least mine do… 😉

Of course everyone should know that labradors LOVE water! They make use of those webbed paws any chance they get! Whether it’s jumping in the pool or that nasty mucky lake, they won’t care. As long as they’re soaking wet and dirty they’ll be happy. 🙂

After play time is over, they like to have a snack. Of course that means, if you don’t oblige they’ll help themselves.

Anything left on the counter is fair game to be eaten in a labradors mind, and when there’s a will there’s a way. Even if you think those chips may be out of reach…think again…

Ahhh yes. There’s definitely never a dull moment in my house with these guys, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

I hope you enjoyed this post. I really loved sharing it with you, and my fur babies loved it too! It took a lot of treats to make them reenact these moments that they’ve done in the past. 🙂 So yes, while owning labradors is a never ending adventure full of daily surprises, the love, loyalty and companionship you’ll gain from owning one is beyond anything you could ever imagine. My house is just a house without these guys. Them along with my family is what truly makes it home 🙂
