These easy DIY etched glass holiday hot cocoa mugs are so fun to make using plain glass cups from the dollar store!
Glass Etching
I’ve wanted to try etching glass for months but something about it intimidated me.
So when I received a big box of craft goodies from Martha Stewart Crafts a few weeks ago that just so happened to have glass paint and an etching kit inside I took it as a sign from the craft gods that it was time!
What you’ll need to make your very own version?
- Glass mugs (I picked mine up at the dollar store)
- Rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball
- Martha Stewart Crafts glass etching cream and brush kit
- Martha Stewart Crafts adhesive stencils (I used the snowflake theme and letters)
- *Gloves- I didn’t have any so I was extremely careful not get any of the etching cream on my skin, but you really should wear them!
How to Make Etched Glass Mugs-
The first thing I did was read the directions.
Usually I jump right into something blindfolded but I wanted this to turn out professional looking, so I took the time to read the directions.
Good thing I did too because I wouldn’t have thought to clean the glass mugs with rubbing alcohol, but that’s what you have to do, so I did…
Next, I used the adhesive stencils to create the words/designs I wanted and painted on the etching cream…
You know that saying “less is more?”
Yeah…Well throw that saying out the window when you’re etching!
MORE IS MORE!
I totally didn’t use enough the first go around and my etching came out kind of splotchy. Luckily I was able to fix it by going in with a thin Martha Stewart glass paint brush with more cream and re-etch over it.
You want the etching cream to look like a gloopy, gloppy mess…like this…
The directions said to leave the cream on for 15 minutes and then wash it off under running water. I waited about 25 before I washed it off. And when I did I was left with this!
>>Insert happy squeal<<
I may have a new obsession! No glass surface is safe! The best part about the Martha Stewart’s glass paints and etching cream is once everything cures, they are top rack dishwasher safe! Beautiful and durable…You’ve got to love that!
These etched glass mugs are perfect gift for friends, family, teachers, doctors, neighbors… anyone and everyone!
Or just make them for you and your family to have hot cocoa in for those chilly winter nights!
