There comes a time in every little girls life where she no longer wants the frilly pink pillows, or shabby chic curtains. She doesn’t want the cutesy pale pink walls, and she definitely does NOT want a “baby room.”
For my daughter, that time happened over a year ago.
I’ll take you back…
When we moved into our house back in June of 2011, besides repainting our front door, another project we worked on immediately was our daughter’s bedroom. Her bedroom in our old house was in the shabby realm, but not in a good way if you catch my drift. So because that’s all she knew I wanted to make her bedroom in this house as similar to the other one so she would be comfortable.
We painted her walls a pale pink, and under the chair rail we added pink stripes. It was girly, sweet, and went with her 3 year old personality…for about a month…
Something happened that summer. My ‘toddler’ turned into a kid. A vocal one. She let me know, quite matter-of-factly that she no longer liked pink, she liked purple. She didn’t like stripes, she liked spots. She definitely did.NOT.like ruffles on her pillows and sheets, because they itched. I was shocked! So I stopped working on her room, because if she didn’t like it, then what was the point of buying stuff she didn’t like?
So my husband and I agreed that we would wait until she was a little older to finish fixing it up. Y’know, when we thought she was capable of having a nice room, with nice furniture and not worrying about if she’s scribbling on the walls, or drawing life-size smiley faces on the back of her door. She’s there now…been there for a few months…we’re the ones who have been slacking.
To refresh your memory, here’s our daughters room currently.
It actually looks a little neater since we cleaned up after I shot these photos. Hey, keeping it real here people! Don’t judge me. Please?
The breakdown of to-do’s and what-I’d-like-to do is as follows…
- Paint (we’ve agreed on an aqua-turquoise color for the walls, since she’s {thankfully} out of the purple phase)
- New ceiling fixture (I’m really torn about this, on one hand I’d love to do a lovely light fixture in there, but it’s SO HOT in that room in the summer)
- New furniture (the dresser and bookshelves are coming from IKEA, the headboard is most likely Target or Wayfair)
- Area rug
- Accessories (Yay for a valid excuse to do some damage at HomeGoods!)
- Organize her closet (I’m hoping that adding a dresser in her room will free up closet space)
- Lighting (we actually bought her new lamps for Christmas. It was our way of saying “hey! You’re getting a bedroom makeover!)
Now, you may notice a couple of things are circled…well my very vocal 5 year old came in to see how her room was coming along and let me know I was missing a few things…
Her must haves-
- A vanity and stool (it’s just too inconvenient for her to put on makeup and hair accessories in the bathroom)
- New bedding and pillows (even though mom just bought her a new comforter set for her birthday, it’s apparently already old)
- New furry, fluffy slippers (new room= new slippers…I totally get it kiddo)
Plans are made, schedule is ready, and it’s time to crank it out.
A not-so-little girl’s-BIG-girl-room-redo is starting this weekend, and it’s the first room makeover of 2013!
Let’s get it done! XO

How sweet and fun! My daughter’s last room makeover was pink and white and gray with a little yellow in the dresser and the quilt. Well, she refuses to use the quilt because she doesn’t like yellow and she wants a new one! Sorry kiddo, not gonna happen! LOL
Can’t wait to see what you do with your daughter’s room, because I’m sure I’ll have no choice in about a year!

Man, they’re fun aren’t they?! I can’t really blame her…its genetics partly! I think I changed my room once every 6 months when I was a pre-teen! 🙂
Girls are SO different from boys!!! I swear, they come out of the womb with an opinion. Mine has been statin’ her case since day one.
The room’s gonna be super cute.
